Britons ignoring the importance of Lasting Powers of Attorney

Those making Wills across the UK are ignoring the importance of also setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs), despite a significant spike in the number of people diagnosed with dementia in recent years.

Those who face the prospect of increasing confusion in later life can chose who they wish to deal with their affairs and equip them with the powers they need to look after their financial affairs and make important decisions regarding their care and medical treatment.

Naturally, these important documents can save a lot of stress and uncertainty in situations where a person’s mental health has been impaired, or is slowly deteriorating due to Alzheimer’s disease or similar conditions.

The most recent data from the Alzheimer’s Society suggests that dementia is growing increasingly common across the UK – with one new person now diagnosed with the condition every three minutes.

It claims that as many as 850,000 people in the UK are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that this figure is likely to rise to more than one million within the next few years.

In April this year, the fees for registering an LPA were substantially reduced in a bid to attract more people to consider these crucial documents.

Ever since application fees were reduced from £110 to £82 and repeat application fees were reduced from £55 to £41, official data suggests that the uptake for LPAs has improved slightly over the course of 2017.

It makes good sense to add Lasting Powers of attorney to the list of items to be attended to when putting your affairs in order.
