Nothing is easy about getting a divorce or separating. The end of a relationship can be emotionally charged with both parties harbouring feelings of resentment and anxiety for the future. Against that background it is all too easy for disputes over financial issues to escalate into painful and expensive legal disputes.

This talk will look at steps that people can put in place to try and defuse potential arguments at an early stage. We will discuss the options for cohabitation agreements, pre-nuptial agreements and post-nuptial agreements to try and avoid disputes further down the line in the event of a relationship breakdown. How do you make sure that the agreements are fair and are likely to be upheld by the court?

Another flash point can be the grounds for divorce. How do you satisfy the courts that the marriage is over without offending the other party and escalating the dispute? We will talk about the recent news stories where a divorce was refused by the courts, best practice to avoid disputes and the debate over whether we should have a genuine no-fault divorce system.

Our guest speaker works with couples divorcing to help them with the emotional and financial aspects of divorce to try and keep disputes out of the courts.
