About

Catherine specialises in commercial property transactions and advice with an emphasis on the healthcare and public sector.

Transactions

  • Advising on the real estate aspects of the externalisation of the first London-based NHS provider arm which required its separation from a Primary Care Trust and its establishment as a new NHS Trust in its own right.
  • Structuring and completing the leasehold occupational arrangements of a new community hospital for a PCT.
  • Acquisitions, disposals and developments of NHS land and buildings acting for NHS Trusts, PCTs, Foundation Trusts and the Secretary of State.
  • Negotiating and drafting complex overage arrangements.
  • Landlord and tenant advice and transactions.
  • The multi-phased sale of 19 care homes to a housing association on behalf of an NHS Trust.  Issues arising included planning, nominations and landlord and tenant matters.
  • The joint disposal of a 150-acre urban extension of a mixed-use site by way of a building lease.  The site is to comprise 1500 houses together with commercial uses and requires the construction of a new highway and junction with a trunk road.  The transaction gave rise to collaboration, ransom, site assembly, planning and highways issues in addition to the commercial development aspects.  The recent downturn in the property market also called for innovative funding arrangements with the local authorities to address viability.

Catherine has worked in legal practice since 1990 both in private practice and in local authority in-house teams.  Her clients have included NHS bodies including the Secretary of State for Health, Government Departments and Agencies, local and police authorities and a global construction company.  This experience has given her a firm understanding of the regulatory and other constraints in which the public sector operates as well as commercial approach to transactions.

Away from the office, Catherine enjoys walking, golf, gardening and travel.
