Mukhtar Karim is a solicitor in the Commercial Property Team at Carter Lemon Camerons LLP and specialises in all aspects of commercial property transactions from acquisitions, disposals, development, lettings, sales and property financing as well as property portfolio work. Mukhtar is familiar with sharia compliant investment structures and has worked with a range of inward investors particularly from the Gulf countries. Mukhtar has worked with sovereign wealth funds, large and medium sized institutional investors, major mobile telecommunications operators, healthcare trusts and large charities.

Transactions

  • Acting for a top 25 charity on the acquisition of new offices in Westminster and acting on the disposal of their former offices in Millbank Towers. Mukhtar has also acted for leading accountants, banks and finance institutions on their London headquarters offices on sharia compliant lease terms. Mukhtar is familiar with sharia compliant investment structures.
  • Acting for investors on the acquisition of multi-let offices in Pall Mall for redevelopment as Offices retail and residential use. The acquisition cost was £70 million that were in part to be financed by sharia compliant schemes. Mukhtar has also acted for sovereign wealth funds on their acquisition of London office accommodation for investment.
  • Acting for a major US internet company on the acquisition of London office accommodation including subletting parts of the building to the BBC Trustees.
  • The acquisition of former NCP car parking spaces in the West End of London for a redevelopment including retail and waste handling worth £40 million. The transaction included the relocation of existing retail tenants and entering into agreements for the redeveloped units.
  • Acting for the major mobile telecommunications operators on the acquisition and disposal of their mast portfolio to other operators and utilities companies. Portfolio sizes often exceeded 1,000 sites and had a national spread.
  • Acting for large property companies and banks as well as smaller operators of shopping centres and institutional investors on letting of retail premises including restaurants, cinemas and hotels. He has acted on major discount retail shopping centres negotiating turnover rent leases. Mukhtar has also acted for tenants on the negotiation of their leases at prime West End sites following redevelopment of premises occupied on 1954 Act  protected business premises.
  • Acting on the development of car showrooms supporting a major manufacturer’s launch of a luxury car brand.
  • Mukhtar has acted for the major RSLs on acquisition of land for development into social accommodation. He has also acted on a number of property rationalisation programs for RSLs and refinancing on portfolio loans.
  • Mukhtar has acted for a London livery company on the letting of multi –let City office accommodation and has acted for a leading educational charity on their property rationalisation program that included the acquisition and disposal of retail units on Eton’s High Street and industrial units.
  • Mukhtar has acted for large and medium sized property developers on their development of new mixed use schemes. He led a team on the refinance and redevelopment of a major site just north of London and oversaw the bulk sale of the residential units as well as negotiation of the retail space in the development. The total project cost was in excess of £100 million.
  • Mukhtar has acted on the development and letting of medical premises including pharmacy units.

Mukhtar read economics at University College, London and was admitted as a solicitor in 2002. He has contributed to legal journals on Islamic inheritance law and participates in seminars and conferences on Islamic Finance.

Out of the office Mukhtar enjoys travelling to the Middle East and Africa. He enjoys teaching Religious Studies at GCSE and A-levels and has worked with major examination boards on the development of their syllabus. Mukhtar also leads teacher training initiatives with local education authorities and voluntary educational institutes.

Mukhtar has volunteered with a medium sized charity focussing on their education and micro-finance work and regularly partakes in their fundraising initiatives.

Mukhtar works with the Muslim Council of Britain on constitutional issues having participated in a leadership development program sponsored by them in 2005.

Mukhtar is a member of the UK Indian Business Council’s Next Generation Network. Mukhtar speaks Arabic, Hindi, Gujerati and Swahili.
