A businessman has launched a bid to have his divorce settlement radically redrawn, having argued that a previous hearing failed to take his commercial success into proper consideration.
In 2015, the High Court ruled that the £140million fortune should be split 50/50 between Randy Work and his estranged wife Mandy Gray.
Mr Work is now arguing that he had made a “special contribution” to the couple’s wealth through his inordinate skill as a financier and, given this, the court should leave aside the usual principle of equally dividing assets. He believes there is a strong argument for him to instead receive a two thirds share.
At the previous proceedings, the Judge concluded that Mr Work’s contribution to wealth creation was not “wholly exceptional.”
Specifically Mr Justice Holman had challenged claims that the multi-millionaire could be considered a “genius”.
“I personally find that a difficult, and perhaps unhelpful, word in this context,” he had said.
“To my mind, the word ‘genius’ tends to be over-used and is properly reserved for Leonardo Da Vinci, Mozart, Einstein, and others like them.”
Mr Work has received permission to take the case to the Court of Appeal and the hearing is listed to take place in February.
