Charities

The Charity sector continues to grow. The Charities Act 2006 allows many organisations to register as charities for the first time. A large number of charities that at present exempt from the need to register with the Charity Commission will soon have to do so.

Charities manage substantial funds donated by the public and it is therefore reasonable that their activities are closely regulated. It is the trustees of a charity who are legally responsible for the charity's management and have to ensure that the requirements of the law are met and that the charity fulfils its objects.

Sometimes Charity Trustees will take action that is outside the charity's objects or which in some other way breaches the rules, often not maliciously but out of ignorance and sometimes over enthusiasm to do well.

Carter Lemon Camerons has a depth and breadth of experience in supporting charities and their Trustees. Many of the services we mention on this website are needed by trustees as charities are subject to the general law as well as the particular rules relating to charities.

We are able to give practical expert advice in the creation of Charities and their subsequent management. We have long experience of advising trustees who have found themselves in difficulties in one way or another and in sorting out those problems. We also have long experience in dealing with the Charity Commission in such areas as applying for orders and schemes and advising charities on drawing up protocols, policies and procedures to ensure that the charity acts properly.
