Launched in December 2018, the government’s Good Work Plan aims to enhance transparency and strengthen the rights of workers in insecure employment.

Written contracts of employment

As of 6 April 2020, employers must provide a written statement of main terms (SMT) to all new employees on their first day, removing the previous two-month grace period.

Significantly, employers must also provide an SMT to ‘workers,’ including those on zero-hour and casual contracts, expanding the scope beyond employees.

The SMT will need to include more detailed information, such as:

  • Duration and conditions of any probationary period
  • All paid leave entitlements
  • Employee benefits
  • Training entitlements
  • Required working days and any variability in hours.
