Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or UK Settlement, allows you to live in the UK without time restrictions after holding a temporary visa for a specific period. You must apply within the UK and prove your residency under an eligible visa category.

British citizenship by naturalisation

If you’re over 18 and have ILR or permanent residence, you may be eligible for British citizenship through naturalisation, provided you meet criteria related to your immigration status, residency, English language skills, and good character.

If not married to a British citizen:

  • You must have been in the UK five years before applying.
  • No more than 450 days’ absence in that period.
  • No more than 90 days’ absence in the last 12 months.
  • No breach of immigration laws, and of good character.

If married to a British citizen:

  • You must have been in the UK three years before applying.
  • No more than 270 days’ absence in that period.
  • Other requirements mirror those for non-married applicants.
